====== CALCAREA CARBONICA ======
{{anchor:s1}}Calcarea Ostrearum. {{anchor:s2}}(Calcarea Carbonica.)
{{anchor:s3}}Trituration of the middle layer of oyster-shells.
{{anchor:s4}}Hahnemann proved first the Calc. acetica, and his provings were printed in his Materia Medica; but after he had commenced to triturate insoluble substances with milk-sugar, he preferred to use in the preparation of Calcarea the whitest pieces from the middle of large broken oyster-shells. {{anchor:s5}}This had been a favorite medicine with him for sick children, in former times, when the chemists considered it a pure carbonate of lime.
{{anchor:s6}}When his grand master-proving was published, he added the symptoms of the acetate, because very similar, but distinguished them by a line --
{{anchor:s7}}Accurate analysis has shown that some portion of the phosphate is contained even in the whitest pieces taken from the oyster-shells; and the long-lasting famous lawsuit of the East-India Company about the James powders has shown that there is an essential difference in the effect on sick persons between chemical preparations apparently alike, if the same substance has been taken from the mineral or animal kingdom. {{anchor:s8}}Hence it has been preferred to name it as above.
