ARUM MACULATUM

Arum Maculatum.

Cuckoopint. Araceae.

A small proving of this first of the family of Araceae was made by C. Hg., in 1822, on three provers, very good observers. It was printed in 1833, in the Archives 13, 1, p. 169, and reprinted with some toxicological symptoms by Noak, in 1843. The latter are given nearly complete in Allen's Encyclopaedia. Some noteworthy reports of the Old School are here added, because they fully agree with the observations of our School.

MIND. [1]

Anxiety and fear.
Melancholy, depressed, hypochondriacal, taciturn.

SENSORIUM. [2]

Vertigo.

INNER HEAD. [3]

Slight pressure in left temple.
Megrim.
Pain in left temple and forehead to occiput, with stiffness of hands.
Headache with dyspepsia.

SIGHT AND EYES. [5]

Aching in left eye, which is inflamed.

HEARING AND EARS. [6]

Pressure below ears back of lower jaw.

SMELL AND NOSE. [7]

Violent irritation of nose and eyes.
Pain in left side of nose.
(OBS:) Nasal polypus.

TEETH AND GUMS. [10]

Gums bleed readily; scorbutis.

TASTE, SPEECH, TONGUE. [11]

Tongue swollen and its papillae injected and raised.
Swollen tongue fills up buccal cavity and makes deglutition impossible.
Stitching and burning on tongue several hours.
Sensation as of a slight excoriation of tongue.
Intense pricking, stinging pain upon tongue and mucous membrane of lips and throat, with a flow of saliva, which seemed to relieve pain a little; pain as if a hundred little needles had been run into tongue and lips.
Pains on tongue and lips were increased by pressure with teeth.
Stinging and burning on surface of tongue, lasting several hours.
Lancinations in tongue as from pin-pricks.
Aphasia.
Swelling of tongue and throat in scarlatina.

INNER MOUTH. [12]

Burning pains in mouth and lips.
Mucous membrane of lips and throat inflamed.
Caustic effect all over lips and mouth.
Stinging in mouth as with a hundred needles.

PALATE AND THROAT. [13]

Stinging pain in tongue, throat and esophagus.
Tickling in throat becomes a violent burning.
Pressure in throat, which provokes swallowing, it seems too narrow; swallowing is difficult, as if there was a swelling on left side above larynx.
Swallowing difficult, as if “palate was down.”
Throat so swollen that a probe could not be introduced into esophagus.
Pain on pressing with finger on left side of throat, near trachea, below larynx, from that it rose into throat, first like a pressure from without inward, in back part of palate above larynx, provokes swallowing, which is difficult, afterwards it feels too narrow.
Burning, constricting pain in throat.

APPETITE, THIRST. DESIRES, AVERSIONS. [14]

Loss of appetite.
Considerable thirst.

EATING AND DRINKING. [15]

After eating: taciturn, sleepy, eyes close readily; emptiness.

HICCOUGH, BELCHING, NAUSEA AND VOMITING. [16]

Vomiting for several hours.
Vomiting of blood.

SCROBICULUM AND STOMACH. [17]

Cardialgia; gastralgia.
Pain in stomach on pressing it.
Burning, constricting pain in stomach.
(OBS:) Dyspepsia.

ABDOMEN AND LOINS. [19]

Abdomen
Emptiness in abdomen, as after vomiting, mornings after eating.
Oppression in abdomen as in great anxiety and fear, without palpitation, afterwards ascending to chest.
Painful pressure on a spot in abdomen, between navel and groin, especially when standing or lying on side or back, most when expanding chest or stretching abdominal muscles; painful to external pressure.
Intense colic, with anxiety, felt in abdomen. Compare Arsen.

STOOLS AND RECTUM. [20]

Diarrhea.
(OBS:) Ascarides.
(OBS:) Prolapsus ani.

URINARY ORGANS. [21]

Emission of blood from urethra.
Increased secretion of urine.
Urine watery, light-colored, smelling almost like burnt horn, with a cloud in middle after standing.

FEMALE SEXUAL ORGANS. [23]

Profuse menstrual flow.

VOICE AND LARYNX. TRACHEA AND BRONCHIA. [25]

Constriction and burning in larynx.
Hoarseness.
Blood-spitting.
Tickling in throat becoming a most violent burning.
Pressure on throat, left side, under larynx, near trachea, is painful.

RESPIRATION. [26]

Hot breath and oppression of chest.
(OBS:) Asthma.

COUGH. [27]

After a long paroxysm of cough, he raises mucus traversed with yellow threads.
(OBS:) Chronic catarrh.

INNER CHEST AND LUNGS. [28]

From abdomen ascending to chest felt an oppression over whole chest, with hot breath, then rose into throat. See 13.
(OBS:) Catarrh; phthisis; asthma.

NECK AND BACK. [31]

Struma; goitre.

REST. POSITION. MOTION. [35]

Standing or lying: expanding chest or stretching abdominal muscles; pain in abdomen worse.

NERVES. [36]

Horrible convulsions, with swelling of tongue until it fills mouth, death in 12 to 16 hours (children chewing leaves).
Great general lassitude.
Prostrate, unable to speak, raises hands to its mouth, uttering at intervals a sharp cry, and starting up as if suffocating.
Profound torpor followed by febrile reaction.

SLEEP. [37]

Sleepiness almost uncontrollable, especially an hour after dinner.
During sleep face red.

TIME. [38]

Morning: emptiness in stomach.

FEVER. [40]

Generally causes slight warmth, first above stomach, afterwards in remote parts.
Excites sweat, even in the aged.

ATTACKS, PERIODICITY. [41]

Attacks of pain irregular and intermitting.

LOCALITY AND DIRECTION. [42]

Without inward: pressure in throat.
Below upward: oppression in abdomen.
Left: pain in temple and forehead; aching in eye; pain side of nose; pain side of throat.

SENSATIONS. [43]

Sensations
As if a hundred little needles had been run into tongue and lips.
Lancinations: in tongue.
Stitching: in tongue.
Stinging: on tongue; in lips; in throat; in mouth, as of needles; in esophagus.
Pricking: in tongue; lips and throat.
Aching: in left eye.
Burning: on tongue; in mouth and lips; in throat; in stomach: in larynx.
Pressure: in left temple; below ears; in throat; in abdomen between navel and groin.
Constriction: in throat; in stomach; in lungs.
Emptiness: in stomach.
Undefined pain: in left temple and forehead to occiput; in left side of nose; in left side of throat; in stomach.
Excoriated feeling: of tongue.
Tickling: in throat.

TISSUES. [44]

Inflammation and ulceration of mucous membranes.

TOUCH. PASSIVE MOTION. INJURIES. [45]

Pressing: pain in stomach agg.; pain in abdomen agg.; pain in throat.

SKIN. [46]

Redness and erosions of skin, also blisters.
(OBS:) Eczema solare.

RELATIONS. [48]

Antidotes: sweet oil; milk; butter. Gums relieve pungent effect in mouth.
