Proofreading sample

You can greatly assist our efforts in digitally publishing old homeopathic journals by proofreading the OCR-processed articles and correcting any errors you find. This way the articles will achieve higher quality and you will also learn plenty about good homeopathy! If you'd like to give it a try, please check that you meet the prerequisites for this volunteer job.

• enough time at your disposal
• great attention to detail
• basic understanding of homeopathy
• good command of the English language
• patience
• basic computer skills (mainly file manipulation – editing, copying etc.)
• Adobe Reader or other PDF reader installed on your computer
• suitable plain text editor (for Windows users, we recommend EditPad Lite)

As a test of your fitness for the job, we would like you to proofread the sample file and send us the result.

1. Download and unzip the file. If you don't know how to unzip a file, Google “how to unzip files”. Unzipping should extract two files out of the archive – sample.html and sample.pdf
2. Open sample.html in your web browser (double-clicking should do it).
3. Open sample.pdf in Adobe Reader or a similar software (again, double-clicking should suffice).
4. Open sample.html in your text editor of choice (usually File / Open).
5. Read the text in the web browser, compare to the original in sample.pdf and make corrections in the text editor.
6. Send us the modified sample.html via email or contact form (please zip the HTML file, if sending via contact form, as HTML files are blocked for security reasons).

• The text is from the 19th century magazine, so some words are written differently, for example “dyspnoea” instead of modern “dyspnea” – do not correct these (only if it is truly an error).

• The HTML file's code must not be changed in any way, so please use such an editor that will prevent this from happening. (EditPad Lite is very suitable for this purpose.) Word, OpenOffice and similar are a no-no.

• To edit the HTML file, open it in a suitable text editor (usually) via File / Open, and make the corrections without touching the HTML tags. HTML tags perform the formatting of the text and they look like this – <p></p> <i> </i>etc. For example <i>some words</i> would make the text display in italics, like this – “some words”. They must not be changed, only the text itself.

• Do not rewrite the article, do not insert words (unless UTTERLY necessary), just correct the errors.
