{{anchor:s4}}A tree attaining a height of more than twenty feet, native to Brazil. {{anchor:s5}}The blossoms, which appear in September, are large and violet colored; it is from them the alcoholic tincture is prepared. {{anchor:s6}}The Jaborandi "is used by South American Indians as antidote to the bite of serpents of the Trigonecephalus group."
{{anchor:s7}}The substance contains an alkaloid passing under the name of Jaborandine, or Pilocarpia, and is used by the old school as a diaphoretic.
{{anchor:s8}}Physiological effects from infusions, extracts and powdered leaves have been reported by Gubler, Coutinho, Robin, Ringer, Gould, Martindale, Smith, Green, Craig, Strumpf and Lewi.
