ARSENICUM ALBUM

Arsenicum Album.

The White Oxide of Metallic Arsenic. As2 O3.

One of the oldest of Hahnemann's provings, but not published in the Fragmenta, nor in the first volume of his Materia Medica. The reasons for this omission he gives in 1816, in the second volume. The ignorant, maltreated, easily frightened people, seeing the great effects of small doses, cried him out a “poison doctor.” The first edition of Arsenicum contained 294 of his own, and 368 from other sources; some from his disciples, Stapf and Hornburg; the rest quotations from various authors, on which, however, he never placed much value. In 1824, in the second edition of his Materia Medica, his own symptoms had increased to 431, and the symptoms of others to 516; Stapf, 23, Hornburg, 15; Langhammer (one of the best provings we have of this remedy), 58; Frederic Hahnemann, 13; Baehr, 11; Meyer, 6; the rest are quotations from the Old School; total, 947.

In 1833, in the third edition of his Materia Medica, we have a much improved edition, although containing some symptoms from Fowler's solution, in all, comprising 1068 symptoms.

In 1839, as an appendix to the second edition of his Chronic Diseases, Hahnemann gives us a fourth and last revision, with many more internal improvements and abridgements, including a proving by Nenning; in all, 1231 symptoms. The administration of Arsenicum is more often disappointing than that of any other drug, the cause of which lies in the too numerous collections of poisonings, and the lack of symptoms produced by higher potencies. This view is corroborated by the collection of the Sulphur symptoms where the relation is the reverse.

RELATIONS. [48]

Antidotes to poisonous doses: milk, albumen, etc., should be given at first to envelop poison until antidote or emetic can be obtained. Induce vomiting by emetics of mustard, sulphate of zinc, or sulphate of copper, etc., but avoid tartar emetic, and other substances which strongly irritate mucous membrane of stomach. Lime-water is useful by diminishing solubility of arsenious acid. Demulcent drinks in large quantities are useful. To counteract that portion of arsenic not expelled from stomach, freshly prepared ferric hydrate or magnesia should be given in large quantities. Castor oil is best purgative to expel arsenous acid from intestines.
Chemical antidotes, such as: animal charcoal, hydrated peroxide of iron, magnesia, and lime-water may prove useful.
Opium is of service as a dynamical antidote. If stomach rejects it, administer in form of clysters. Hepar is a useful antidote.
Use brandy and stimulants when there is much depression and collapse.
If urine is suppressed give large quantities of water containing sweet spirits of nitre.
Antidotes to potencies of arsenic: Camphor., Cinchon., Chin., Sulph., Ferrum., Graphit., Hepar., Iodine., Ipec., Nux vom., Sambuc., Tabac., Veratr.
Arsenic antidotes: Carb. veg., Cinchon., Ferrum., Graphit., Hepar., Iodum., Ipec., Laches., Mercur., Nux vom., Sambuc., Tabac., Veratr.
Arsenic has been found useful in ailments from: chewing tobacco, alcoholism, sea-bathing, sausage poisoning, dissection wounds, anthrax poison, Strychnia., Phosphor., Digit., Plumbum; Iodine., Cinchon., Ipec., Carb. veg., Graphit., Laches., and Veratr.
Arsenic has cured after failure of: Agar. (oscillation of eyeballs); after Bellad., Chamom., Cicut. and Calomel (in inoculation during operation for scirrhus of mamma).
Arsenic has proved of use after: Morphia in scirrhus uteri.
Arsenic is suitable after: Acon., Arnic., Bellad., Cinchon., China., Ipec., Laches., Veratr.
Remedies useful after Arsenic: Aran. diad., Nux vom., Iodium, Sulphur (retinitis albuminurica, scrofulous ophthalmia, amaurosis, etc.).
Complements: All. sat., Carb. veg., Phosphor.
Arsen. alb. is most similar to Arsen. met.
Compare with: Acon. (arterial excitement, angina pectoris, etc.); Apoc. (dropsy from heart disease); Arg. nitr. (diarrhea, dysentery); Bellad., Bismuth. (hasty drinking, vomiting); Calc. carb. (delirium tremens); Cann. ind. (delirium); Carb. veg. (asthma, collapse); Cinchon., (debility, sallow face, etc.); Ferrum (dropsy after abuse of quinine, but mucous membrane is pale); Hyosc. (suppression of urine); Ipec. (sick stomach, vomiting, asthma, etc.); Kreosot. (vomiting); Laches. (gangrene, erysipelas, etc.); Lycop. (cough, etc.); Nux vom. (alcoholism); Phosphor. (fatty degeneration, debility, etc.); Pulsat. (gastralgia, etc., from ice-cream, cake, etc.); Rhus tox. (typhoid); Silic. (suppressed foot sweat); Tabac. (deathly nausea, cold sweat); Veratr. (esophagitis).
