The White Oxide of Metallic Arsenic. As2 O3.

One of the oldest of Hahnemann's provings, but not published in the Fragmenta, nor in the first volume of his Materia Medica. The reasons for this omission he gives in 1816, in the second volume. The ignorant, maltreated, easily frightened people, seeing the great effects of small doses, cried him out a “poison doctor.” The first edition of Arsenicum contained 294 of his own, and 368 from other sources; some from his disciples, Stapf and Hornburg; the rest quotations from various authors, on which, however, he never placed much value. In 1824, in the second edition of his Materia Medica, his own symptoms had increased to 431, and the symptoms of others to 516; Stapf, 23, Hornburg, 15; Langhammer (one of the best provings we have of this remedy), 58; Frederic Hahnemann, 13; Baehr, 11; Meyer, 6; the rest are quotations from the Old School; total, 947.

In 1833, in the third edition of his Materia Medica, we have a much improved edition, although containing some symptoms from Fowler's solution, in all, comprising 1068 symptoms.

In 1839, as an appendix to the second edition of his Chronic Diseases, Hahnemann gives us a fourth and last revision, with many more internal improvements and abridgements, including a proving by Nenning; in all, 1231 symptoms. The administration of Arsenicum is more often disappointing than that of any other drug, the cause of which lies in the too numerous collections of poisonings, and the lack of symptoms produced by higher potencies. This view is corroborated by the collection of the Sulphur symptoms where the relation is the reverse.

He sees all kinds of vermin on his bed, throws handfuls of them away, and tries to escape from them.
He imagines that he sees burglars in his room, and listens under the bed; he is bathed in cold sweat.
Periodically returning fancies.
Talks wildly, with open eyes, and is not conscious of being flighty.

Delirium, with great prostration.
Delirium during heat, unconsciousness, mania, wants to be held; with a tearing headache. ~ Intermittent.
Mania; headache; terrible anxiety, noise in his ears as of many bells; sees a man who has hanged himself beckoning him to cut him loose, on failing to accomplish this, he attempts to hang himself; being prevented he falls into despair, and becomes so restless he can scarcely be kept in bed, loses speech, with full consciousness, tries to write, but can make only unintelligible characters; he trembles, weeps, his forehead is covered with anxious sweat, finally kneels down and lifts his hands in supplication.
Rage; had to be chained.

Arsenic cases are generally relieved by warm applications; they are very frequently periodic in their occurrence, commencing every Fall, and often changing from one eye to the other.
Iris discolored, reacting sluggishly. ~ Keratitis punctata.
Progressive choroiditis disseminata, which alternated with bronchial catarrh; when the eyes were amel., the chest was agg., and vice versa.
Syphilitic iritis.
Parenchymatous keratitis, with excessive photophobia; lies in bed with face buried in pillows, hot, scalding lachrymation causes an eczematous eruption; paroxysmal pains; child fretful and obstinate (compare Rhus).
Keratoiritis, with burning pains in and over eyes, profuse, acrid lachrymation.
Sclerotica deep red, with great photophobia. ~ Ophthalmia.
Vascular elevations on cornea, resulting from ulceration, aggravated by opening and closing eyes, with violent burning pains every afternoon.
Ulceration of cornea recurring first in one eye, then in other. ~ Scrofulous ophthalmia.
Ophthalmia, with ulcers on cornea before and during menses.
Ulcer on outer side of cornea, with elevated edges, pain like pricking of needles, excoriation of external canthus, burning and sticking pains.

Conjunctiva looks like a piece of a raw beef.

Trembling of upper eyelid, with lachrymation. ~ Conjunctivitis.

Eyelids edematous and spasmodically closed.
Soreness of internal surface of lids, which are swollen externally and spasmodically closed, so that opening eyes causes intense burning sticking pain.
Edges of lids painful during motion, as if dry and rubbing on ball.
Pain in margin of eyelids, on moving them, as if they were dry and rubbed against balls, both in open air and in room.
Burning in margins of lids; in evening a feeling as of sand in eyes, obliging him to rub them.
Lids were very sore on inner margins. ~ Scrofulous ophthalmia.
Brilliant, red inner margin of lids, dryness of their inner surface. ~ Trachoma.
Lids inflamed only on internal surface; they are painful, dry and rub against ball; they burn and can scarcely be opened. ~ Chronic granulated lids.
Extreme redness of inner surface of eyelids, with an uneasy sensation rather than pain, often obliging one to rub the eyes.
Ulcerations on inner surface of eyelids. ~ Ophthalmia scrofulosa.
Edema of eyelids. ~ Bright's disease.
Eyelids swollen and edematous, first upper then lower (this swelling is mostly non-inflammatory and painless); the edematous lids are firmly and spasmodically closed, and look as if distended with air. [Obs. “The edema of the lids, especially the lower one, is not at all like the puffiness of Apis or Rhus, nor is it dependent upon infiltration of the connective tissue as it may be in Rhus, but is associated with the general cachectic Arsenic conditions.”]
Agglutination of lids. ~ Typhus.
Eyes sunken in their sockets, closed eyelids gummed. ~ Febris nervosa putrida.

Breathing asthmatic; must incline chest forward; must spring out of bed at night, especially about 12 P. M.
