CAUSTICUM

Causticum.

Tinctura acris sine Kali.

Causticum was first mentioned by Hahnemann in his Apothekerlexicon. His views are fullyset forth in the first volume, published in the year 1793, under the word “Feuer,” on p. 293, and in the last volume, published in 1799, under “Spiesglanztinctur,” p. 256. His mode of preparation is found in Chronic Diseases, vol. iii, in the introduction to his arrangement, in which are included the symptoms of the time-honored Tinctura acris, which was considered by him in all respects similar. In the second volume of Materia Medica Pura, first and second editions, Hahnemann defends his views fully, and gives the indications he had collected up to that time. In the third edition the Aetzstofftinktur is omitted, because he placed the remedy among the antipsorics, and at the same time recommended the weaker but purer preparations of lime. In the fourth edition, 1830, vol. iv, p. 81, he not only gives a long list of the most remarkable cures, but also his provings and those of his pupils, in all 1014 symptoms.

Whatever diversity of opinion may exist theoretically in regard to the chemical nature of this substance (see Lorbacher's treatise, A. H. Z., vol. xcv), the unquestionable good results obtained by its use, in potentized form, by a majority of out best practitioners, stamp it a polychrest of the highest order.

Irrespective of the clinical cases taken from Rückert's collection, Stapf's Archives, and the older journals, the following clinical authorities from our more recent literature are mentioned, as showing the extensive and continued use of this remedy:
